Paul Peregal attended the School of Art and Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under the directorship of the founding member, Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven and Peregal’s colour theory instructor. Peregals early years were inspired by the London school, and artists such as Bacon, Sutherland, Freud, Auerbach, Kossoff and Bratby.
His paintings and portraits offer an explosive and visceral energy, an evolving plastic tapestry with influences of Kokoschka and Soutine, conveying energy and vitality through colour and form, and imbuing his canvas with a post modern expressionist twist to people, landscapes and cityscapes.
